«Twofold (Goats & Sheep)» solo exhibition of Gary Hill in Carabanchel (C/ Alejandro Sánchez 94, Madrid)
This March, coinciding with Art Week, OBLIQUO inaugurates a special cycle of video creation with 2 pieces by pioneering new media art pioneer Gary Hill in two key cultural venues in the capital:

During the outstanding month of art, the new OBLIQUO space opens its doors to experimental video art with the most powerful artist on the scene.
The pioneer of experimental video art, Gary Hill, is an American creator internationally renowned for exploring the relationship between language, the body, time and technology. Throughout his career, Hill has used digital and audiovisual media to investigate themes such as perception, communication and philosophy, often creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences for the viewer.

Edition of fifteen and two artist’s proofs
Derived from the single-channel video Goats & Sheep (created for the limited edition Gary Hill: Around & About: a Performative View, Paris: Éditions du Regard, 2001), Twofold (Goats & Sheep) consists of two identical projections positioned horizontally side-by-side on a wall. The works use the original text and video source material of the installation Withershins, 1995, consisting of two simultaneous views of a person signing: the hands and arms are framed in one and the back of the head and top of the shoulders in the other. This latter view catches the hands when they refer to the head during signing. The text, which is written by the artist and ‘signed’ in the video, was derived from the original matrix of 420 phrases available in the interactive installation Withershins.
For Goats & Sheep and Twofold (Goats & Sheep), Hill changed the color image into black-and-white, combined the two projections of the hands and arms and back of the head into a single alternating image which switches when the text references the ‘head.’ He then recorded his voice and synchronized it to the original signing. The stereo field is used to double the voice with about a second of delay added to the sound. This doubling mirrors the hands and numerous references and repetitions heard in the text.

Gary Hill
GARY HILL (n. 1951, Santa Monica, CA) has worked in a wide range of media, including sculpture, sound, video, installation and performance, since the early 1970s.
His long-standing work explores a variety of themes ranging from the physicality of language, synaesthesia and perceptual conundrums to ontological space and viewer interactivity.
Exhibitions of his work have been presented at museums and institutions around the world, including solo exhibitions at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Guggenheim Museum SoHo, New York; Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel; Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona; and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, among others. Commissions include works for the Science Museum in London and the Seattle Central Public Library in Seattle, Washington, and an installation and performance for the Colosseum and Temple of Venus and Rome in Italy. Hill has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations, and has received numerous awards and honours, including the Leone d’Oro Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale (1995), a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award (1998), Kurt-Schwitters-Preis (2000) and honorary doctorates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland (2005) and Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle, WA (2011).
